With sadness we share the passing of MBL Trustee Emeritus Frank Press, internationally renowned geophysicist and presidential science advisor, who died on January 29, 2020 at the age of 95. The ǧƵ flag will be lowered to half-mast in his memory.

Dr. Press served on the ǧƵ Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2003. He was President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences from 1981 to 1993 and Science Advisor to the President of the United States and Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy under Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981.

Prior to that, Dr. Press was Professor of Geophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chairman of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. He also held academic appointments at Columbia University and the California Institute of Technology. In 1994 Dr. Press was awarded the National Medal of Science.

Dr. Press’s wife of 62 years, Billie (Kallick) Press, a leader in early childhood education, died in 2009. He is survived by a son, William H. Press, a daughter, Paula Press, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
